Smartphone survival guide: How to stretch your battery life

Article cited from news.cnet.com by Batterybay.net
With the smartphone increasingly becoming the lifeline for any household, keeping it alive is more important than ever.
But with Hurricane Sandy barreling its way across the East Coast, thousands of homes face the prospect of losing power for several days. That's bad news for power-hungry smartphones, many of which can barely last a day with normal use.
Fear not. CNET has compiled this handy smartphone survival guide to make the most out of your phone's battery. If a power outage hits, you'll know exactly what to do to ensure you remain connected.
Turn off the extra wireless connections. Today's smartphones have a myriad of different connections, few of which are really that integral during a blackout. Wireless connections such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are great during a regular day, but they can quickly drain a battery. Similarly, it's smart to turn off the 4G connection if your phone has the option, since 4G is a notorious power hog. In power-saving situations, GPS is also a no no, and disabling location services is another smart move.
Limit your use. For gadget enthusiasts and geeks, the smartphone is the equivalent of a drug -- one you can't stay off of. Well, a blackout is a good chance to go cold turkey. It's smart to limit the use as much as possible. Each time you turn on the display, you're cutting into the phone's battery life.
Share phones. If you're with a group of people, it might be useful to shut off all but one of the phones. That way, if one goes down, someone else can turn on a phone that still has its full charge. Of course, it might be handy to take down some critical phone numbers before turning off the devices.
Airplane mode is your friend. If you don't want to completely shut off your phone, switch to airplane mode to shut off all of the radios, and switch back out of airplane mode only when you need to make a call or send a text message.
Keep your phone plugged in. If you still have power and are looking to limit your usage already, why not let your phone rest near an outlet? When the power goes out, you'll know your phone is holding as much of a charge as it possibly can.
Charge backups. Do you have an extra battery? Make sure that's charged up. Alternatively, a fully charged laptop can also be used as a battery of sorts, since it can charge a phone through a USB connection.
Just say no to push. Most smartphones are hooked up to one e-mail account or another, and these devices either get messages pushed down to them or they fetch the e-mails. You can save a lot of battery by turning off the push notifications.
Close unnecessary apps. A lot of applications continue to run in the background or get their own push notifications. Close these applications to ensure that your phone isn't still pinging the network without your knowledge. Likewise, close the widgets in Android, since they often update themselves on a regular basis.
Do not stream. If you have to listen to music or video, don't use streaming services, which constantly puts a strain on the phone's battery. Only play videos or songs already loaded on the phone. Likewise, try not to play games that require a connection, like "Words With Friends" or "The Simpsons: Tapped Out," or games that require phones to rev up their processors, such as the "Infinity Blade" series.
Dim the display. Displays actually take up quite a bit of power, particularly if the phone has a large and bright screen. Most phones have an automatic brightness option, though you could manually dim the screen to preserve battery. Lock the phone and turn off the display as much as possible.
Send text messages instead of calling. Because of the nature of text messages, the conversation is usually kept short and concise. Phone calls can drag on, sucking up valuable battery life, but a text message gets the information out far more efficiently, and isn't constantly running.
Print out these instructions. Lastly, you don't want to be reading this on your smartphone or laptop. Print or write out these tips so you can consult them later -- ideally by candlelight and not by the glow of your mobile device.

iPhone Battery Preservation Tips for the Hurricane

Article cited from technolution.tumblr.com by Batterybay.net
Hurricane Irene is set to arrive in the DC area tomorrow afternoon, and with it possible power outages throughout the Metro DC region. Here are a few tips to keep your iPhone lasting as long as possible:
  • Turn off Push Notifications. You really don’t need a message from Facebook that Janie’s dog did the cutest thing.  Settings > Notifications > Off
  • Turn off Bluetooth. You’re not driving in a hurricane. Turn off Bluetooth to save a bit of extra juice. Settings > General > Bluetooth > Off
  • Turn off 3G. The goal here isn’t updating Twitter or keeping up on work email, it’s preservation of the phone so you can call Pepco or BG&E when the power goes down. Moving to EDGE data will help. Settings > General > Network > 3G Off
  • Turn off Location Service. If you’re hunkered down, you know where you are. You can always turn this on for a bit to see where the nearest pizza place is:Settings > General > Location Services > Off
  • Turn off Push email & calendaring. Again, this is a hurricane, so you don’t need that calendar invite from your cousin right away. Same for the email from your mother in law. If they need you, they’ll call, which is what we’re saving battery for. Settings > Mail, Contacts & Calendars > Fetch New Data > Push: Off
  • Turn off auto-check of email. If you’re important enough to need this, you’re important enough to be somewhere with a gen-set, a massive flywheel UPS, and redundant bandwidth. Turn it off. Settings > Mail, Contacts & Calendars > Fetch New Data > Manually
  • Turn down your screen brightness. Given how dark these storms are, you can lower your brightness from blinding to dim. Settings > Brightness
  • Shorten your auto-lock period. See previous statement about hunkering down. This is more to save battery than be convenient. I’ll forgive you for turning off your passcode (if you can) for this weekend, if you want. Turn it back on Monday. Settings > Auto-Lock > 1 Minute.
  • Make sure to kill graphics-heavy apps like Angry Birds. From the home screen, double-press the Home Button, then press and hold on the app icon, then hit the red minus at the top of the icon in the switcher tray.
  • If coverage goes out, switch to Airplane Mode. In the event of cell coverage going out, or worse, getting spotty, switch to Airplane Mode for a while. Searching for signal is very battery intensive.
Alright, that ought to do it for now. Good luck and good hunting.

Screen Standby Keeps Your Android from Sleeping While Streaming While Minimizing Battery Usage

Article cited from lifehacker.com by Batterybay.net

 Adam Dachis
Android: If you use your Android for streaming or video playback over HDMI, you've likely run into the problem of your tablet's screen staying on unnecessarily. This runs down the battery, and there's no need to see the image on both screens. Screen Standby fixes that problem.
Screen Standby simply sets your screens brightness to zero while your streaming/playing video over HDMI. It's a simple trick but solves an annoying problem for those of us who use our Androids as a media center. To use it, just tap the button to turn off your backlight and you're set. You can still see the image you're streaming on your TV (or wherever), but your screen will be off. To get things back to normal, all you have to do is lock and unlock your device.
Screen Standby is free to download, but it does require rooting your device.
Comment from Batterybay.net:
It is a good tips, turn off the backlight when streaming. It has some difficulties as it need to root your device before you can do that. Another way out for this situation is to add a back up battery pack and plug to use it whenever you need an extra battery energy. We can use powerbank that selling here to take the situation under your control.

Organic Solar Cells With High Electric Potential for Portable Electronics

Article cited from ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) — A new breakthrough in solar technology means portable electronic devices such as e-book readers could soon be re-charged on the move in low light levels and partial shading.
Professor Tim Jones. (Credit: Image courtesy of University of Warwick)

Scientists from the University of Warwick, in collaboration with spin-out company Molecular Solar, have created an organic solar cell that generates a sufficiently high voltage to recharge a lithium-ion battery directly, without the need to connect multiple individual cells in series. Modules of these high voltage cells perform well in different light conditions including partial shade making them well matched to consumer electronic devices such as e-book readers, cameras and some mobile phones.
Organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells, the so-called 'third generation' of solar technology, offer exciting opportunities thanks to the potential for very cheap manufacture, lightweight, low profile photovoltaics compatible with flexible substrates, which means they are ideally matched to portable electronic device applications.
This new OPV technology is a significant breakthrough as scientists have addressed the problem of low out-put voltage when the module is in low light levels or partial shading taking an important step towards rolling out cheap OPV cells in low-power portable electronics.
The scientists, from the University's Department of Chemistry, have demonstrated a cell with an open circuit voltage of over 7V which delivers maximum power at more than the 4.2V needed to power a standard lithium ion battery.
This is the first time these features have been demonstrated using ultra high voltage OPV cells.
Professor Tim Jones, one of the lead researchers at University of Warwick, along with Dr Ross Hatton and Professor Mike Shipman, said: "We have taken a big step towards cheap-to-make solar chargers which can top up your devices whenever they are being used -- both indoors and out.
"A small light-weight solar charger no bigger than a credit card can be fitted to the battery of an e-book reader for example, and constantly top it up with power while you are reading it -- even if you are sitting inside on the sofa.
"Alternatively, this kind of solar cell could be ideal for outdoor use as it is light-weight and portable.
"The next step is to extend this technology outside the laboratory to make cheap OPV chargers available on a commercial scale through Molecular Solar."
The research is detailed in the paper Ultra-high voltage multijunction organic solar cells for low-power electronic applications and was published in the journal Advanced Energy Materials.
Crucial pieces of equipment used in this research were funded through the Science City Research Alliance (SCRA) Energy Efficiency project. Molecular Solar is soon to launch a new round of fund-raising to support the commercialisation of this technology.
The University received funding from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) and the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) to go towards this research
