Qualcomm's BatteryGuru App Improves Android Battery Life

Article cited from http://mashable.com by Batterybay.net
Android-battery-charging
Battery life is always a huge concern with any smartphone. If you’re not careful, especially with Android devices, you can wind up with quite a few applications running in the background, which drains battery.
Several smartphones now come with built-in software to optimize battery life. For those that don’t, Qualcomm released Snapdragon BatteryGuru, an Android application that monitors what’s going on behind the scenes on your phone, and adjusts your phone’s settings to maximize battery life.
The app has received over 100,000 downloads since its debut in beta February of this year, and is officially launching Tuesday.
The app learns your personal phone behaviors, and then devises ways to optimize battery performance based on those behaviors.

For instance, leaving on the Wi-Fi can drain battery power, as your phone is constantly searching for a Wi-Fi network for connection. BatteryGuru learns your most frequently used Wi-Fi hotspots, and then enables Wi-Fi when you’re around.
Android apps often refresh more than necessary, which adversely effects battery life. BatteryGuru pays attention to app usage patterns, then refreshes your apps based on those patterns. This ensures apps are updated when you need them to be — but aren’t draining battery when you don’t want them to.
Lots of little tweaks ultimately leave you with a little more juice at the end of the day.
You can download BatteryGuru for free now from Google Play for the majority of Snapdragon-powered devices, including smartphones created by Samsung, Motorola, HTC, LG and Sony.

Sony Xperia S starts getting updated to Android 4.1.2

Sony Xperia S starts getting updated to Android 4.1.2
Article cited from phonearena.com by Smartphonebay.net
Back in April, we told you to expect the Sony Xperia S to be updated to Jelly Bean some time in May. Well, with just one week left in the month, Sony's French Twitter account tweeted the information that Android 4.1.2 is being pushed out now to certain builds of the device. You might remember the Sony Xperia S and the unique design of the model. A thin translucent bar is right near the bottom of the phone, giving Sony's former Android flagship model a different look.

Sony's official support page for the phone has just changed back, showing the Android 4.0 build instead of the Android 4.1.2. that showed on the page earlier. The tweet from Sony Mobile France reads "Xperia S: The deployment for 4.1.2 build has just begun for the first builds" when translated. They add that the update is being pushed out and other builds of the phone will be updated next week.

Comment from Smartphonebay.net:
Nice to get this update patch this soon. Seems that Sony will not easily give up any flagship device using customers. Great news to Xperia S Users.

BlackBerry Plans To Launch BBM Across Multiple Platforms This Summer

BBM BBM Across Multiple Platforms
If you’re already a fan of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), we’ve got some exciting news designed to make it easier for you to connect with your entire mobile social network. BlackBerry plans to make BBM, our wildly popular mobile messaging service, available for the first time to iOS® and Android™ users this summer, (subject to approval by Google Play and the Apple App Store, as applicable). This means that, once available, you can welcome your friends and family using these other mobile platforms to connect over BBM and share in the Team BlackBerry love.
As we’ve chronicled on our Inside BlackBerry blog for some time now, BBM set the standard for mobile instant messaging with fast and reliable service and an added layer of engagement with delivered and read statuses. You’ve shared with us your stories about how BBM has kept you connected when it mattered most to you. Upon release of the multi-platform BBM service, you can broaden that real-time connection to friends and colleagues on other supported mobile platforms.
In the first version of multi-platform BBM, iOS and Android users are expected to be able to experience the following BBM features:
  • The immediacy of BBM chats
  • Multi-person chats
  • Voice note sharing
  • BlackBerry Groups, where BBM users are able to set up groups of up to 30 people and share calendar, photos, files and more
The team here at BlackBerry has definitely been working hard to bring the much-adored BBM experience to a wider group of mobile users. In a recent press release at BlackBerry Live 2013, Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President, Software Product Management and Ecosystem, at BlackBerry had this to say:
“For BlackBerry, messaging and collaboration are inseparable from the mobile experience, and the time is definitely right for BBM to become a multi-platform mobile service. BBM has always been one of the most engaging services for BlackBerry customers, enabling them to easily connect while maintaining a valued level of personal privacy. We’re excited to offer iOS and Android users the possibility to join the BBM community.”

BBM Quick Facts:

  • More than 60 million monthly active users
  • More than 51 million daily active users who are connecting with friends or colleagues an average of one and a half hours every day.
  • BBM users send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, nearly twice as many messages per user per day as compared to other mobile messaging apps
  • Almost half of BBM messages are read within 20 seconds of being received; indicating how truly engaged BBM customers are
Today, BlackBerry also announced BBM Channels, a new social engagement platform within BBM that will allow customers to connect with the businesses, brands, celebrities and groups they are passionate about. BlackBerry plans to add support for BBM Channels as well as voice and video chatting for iOS and Android later this year, subject to approval by the Apple App Store and Google Play. If approved by Apple and Google, the BBM app will be available as a free download in the Apple® App StoreSM and Google Play store. Additional details about system requirements and availability will be announced closer to the launch.
That’s some pretty big news, indeed. Be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments below, who will be the first person from your extended network that you introduce to BBM?
Comment from Smartphonebay.net:
BBM is the most advantage app that is still holded by blackberry to fight against iOS and Android. With the open market of BBM to two other operating system, would blackberry OS still alive for the coming 5 years? We doubted the market will be a merging trend in the future. That is all those strength of certain specific OS will be acquired by the other. The results for this trend would become one OS to conquer the market or few OS that is highly similar to each other and sale at similar price in the market. The release of BBM to Android and iOS is just a beginning. Do you agree with that?

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Expected to Have Sold 10 Million Units by Next Week

Samsung-galaxy-S4-launch_original
Article cited from http://androidheadlines.com by Smartphonebay.net
Samsung has been making waves this year with their new flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, and now they may see the fruits of their labor. At first many simply saw the device as a mere upgrade from its predecessor the Galaxy S3, but it now reaches nearly 10 million sold! This is not an unprecedented feat for Samsung; in fact the GS3 reached the 10 million mark in late July last year after releasing two months earlier on May 29th, 2012. That in and of itself is an impressive accomplishment, but now Samsung is one-upping themselves. The GS4 has only been out for 21 days ago, launching on April 26th, and has already reached over six million units sold! Samsung’s co-CEO JK Shin has told the Korea Press that he expects the devices sales to reach the desired projection by the end of next week.
If this were accomplished, Samsung would have literally cut their turn around for upgrading Galaxy phones in half. So what made it possible for Samsung to break their own impressive record and reach 10 million sold in only a month? Much of it comes down to some subtle (and some not so subtle) differences in their marketing strategy. On the subtle side, the GS4 was immediately available upon release in North America from three major U.S mobile carriers, as opposed to the GS3 debuting a month after its European release last year. Availability allows products to reach such immense sales, but it is pointless without a good marketing strategy as backup.
Apple’s iPhone 5 came out September 21st of last year, and that was right about the time they began airing TV ads portraying their already successful GS3 as the “iPhone killer”. Their ads showed the massive pre-release lines that stretched for blocks stemming from the Apple store while people waited for the iPhone 5 talking about it’s new features that users were skeptical about such as the inverted headphone jack and new charging port. Then, as if their ears were burning, GS3 users would pop up and give a free display of the Samsung phone’s capabilities. Now even though this was an ad for the predecessor, Samsung’s placement of these ads simply tenderized the consumer market for the GS4 and planted the idea in their minds that Samsung is the new kid on the block, here to knock the iPhone down a peg. And it seems that playing off Apple’s marketing and user community in hindsight has worked brilliantly considering Samsung’s Galaxy S4 should be in 10 million pockets by the end of next week and stands poised as the iPhone 5’s biggest competitor.

Rumor: Google set to unveil Google Edition Galaxy S4 at I/O

Article cited from http://androidandme.com by Smartphonebay.net
galaxy-s-4-top
According to Russell Holly of Geek.com, Google is gearing up to make a huge announcement tomorrow at I/O, completely out of left field. While we won’t see a new Nexus phone unveiled just hours from now, Holly is citing sources already at the developer conference that say we will see a “Google Edition” of the Samsung Galaxy S4 running stock Android.
Hardware wise, the Galaxy S4 is an absolute beast of a phone. A high-end processor, 5-inch full HD display, and fantastic camera are just a few of the hardware elements that make the S4 one of the best Android powered smartphones money can buy. Unfortunately, Samsung’s custom version of Android isn’t for everyone. The Google Edition of the Galaxy S4 would remedy that, not only giving consumers a chance to buy a non-Nexus stock Android device, but one with a removable battery and expandable storage as well.
How the Google Edition of the S4 would be sold, whether through Google Play or Samsung directly, is still a mystery. But supposedly it will work on T-Mobile.
As far as rumors go, this one is pretty out there. It’s strange that we haven’t heard anything about the Google Edition Galaxy S4 before now, some 12 hours until it’s supposed to be unveiled, but Holly and Geek.com have been on-point with Google related rumors in the past. There may be good reason to get excited for this one. Not long now until we know for sure.
Comment from Smartphonebay.net Staff:
Recently, T-mobile always publish google edition of Galaxy S series. It is not surprised to have Galaxy S4 Google edition released and distributed once again by T-mobile. Only one thing to doubt is why Galaxy S4 google edition still have no information until now. Would the delayed release of the press information be related to the the patent war among Galaxy S series and iPhone???

Samsung ready for 5G rollout in 2020, has reportedly pulled down 1Gbps in tests

Article Cited from Engadgets.com by Smartphonebay.net
LTE might be all the rage right now, but next generation mobile technology is already in the works. According to Korea's Yonhap News Agency, Samsung has successfully tested its 5G platform, pulling down data at 1Gbps in recent tests. The company apparently needed 64 antenna elements to pull the trick off, but says the technology will be available to customers by 2020 -- matching the European Commission's goal quite nicely. It may not be the fastest 5G test we've seen inrecent months, but we're not going to scoff at progress.
Comment from Smartphonebay.net:
5G mobile data transfer in 2020??? We may expect 5G may come much earlier than the time expected by Samsung. Nowadays, the mobile data transfer technology growing very fast and attracting much more investment than ever before. It is clearly that Samsung only expect a linear growth of the technology level but indeed it is growing exponentially in the real world. We wish to see 5G before the date when Samsung expected. Wish best luck for those scientists working so hard on this subject!!

LG Working on the Next Nexus, is This a Good Thing?

google-nexus-logo_thumb
So we know that Google, like always, will be releasing a new Nexus this year. So far we have seen very little information regarding this next generation. Well lets get those rumor mills turning because we now know that LG is working with Google to produce the next Nexus phone as reported by The Korea Times.
LG partnered with Google to create the most recent Nexus, the Nexus 4, last year and it appears that Google was so pleased with their work that they will be trusted with manufacture of the next one! The Nexus 4 is a fantastic device and is set to become even better with the apparent release of an LTE model at I/O. However, there a few issues nearly many had with the device that LG will hopefully correct with the next iteration.
First off, the exterior LG crafted is beautiful. I’m looking at the device right now and it just screams quality. That is, of course, till you flip it over and see the massive crack down the back. Please LG you know that fantastic Gorilla Glass stuff? Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s right there on the front of the phone. Put that on the back! If for some reason the manufacturing process doesn’t work correctly, then go with some nice, non-glossy, polycarbonate. I’m sure you will put in a 1080p display, although I’m in the minority, I would rather keep the 720p display and get a nice bump in the battery department.
As far as CPU specs go, you can probably stick with the 2gb of ram. More and more each day it looks like 4.3 will be the next edition of Android. As the hardware requirements don’t usually bump up too much outside of full number updates, the RAM is probably a decent area to save a little money. The CPU can always use a bump to deal with some of the more graphic intensive apps we’ll be seeing later this year, but again LG made an excellent selection of CPU.
As you have probably noticed I’m not asking LG to bring all that much new to the table. Why? Well its quite simple, the number one reason I am excited LG will be returning is their price point. I completely expect the nexus 5 (or whatever they call it) to be around $300 once again. LG realizes that we don’t need a full metal uni-body chasis or even an Octocore CPU. Just a good, solid device at a price that makes it easy to purchase unlocked.
Are you all excited for the Next Nexus now that you know LG will be producing it? Or are you more excited for the Motorola X phone, or X Fon, or whatever the heck they call it. Let us know in the comments below
Comment from Smartphonebay.net:
It is nice for us to know LG is ready to product next Nexus. LG always give a very good outlook of the smartphone including Nexus 4. We wish the new nexus still has a fine crafted appearance together with best fit spec for highly demanding users.

Google denies battery-draining location bug in Google Now for iOS

Article Cited from bgr.com by Batterybay.net

Google Now was probably the best thing to happen to mobile devices in 2012. Google’sbrilliant virtual assistant uses location, search history and other data to automatically present users with information like the weather, driving directions to meetings and travel times, sports scores and more without any interaction required on the user’s part. After a long wait, iOS device users finally gained access to Google Now earlier this week when Google updated its iOSsearch app with Google Now functionality, but its arrival was marred by two problems: first, platform limitations on iOS and Google’s decision to forego push notifications make Now far less useful on Apple devices than it is on Android. Beyond that, an apparent bug in Google’s app is seemingly causing location services to stay on and drain users’ batteries.
The first issue is insurmountable, to an extent. The whole point of Google Now is that it gives us all of this great information before we even know we need it. Since apps are very limited on iOS in terms of what they can do while minimized, Now will never be as useful on iOS as it is on Android. Push notifications would have helped matters to a degree — Google could have alerted users when important new “cards” become available — but the app’s functionality would still be limited compared to the Android version.
The second issue is something that a number of users began complaining about shortly after Google Now became available on iOS. Once Now is enabled in Google’s search app, it keeps locations services alive even while minimized. Many users complained that the batteries on their iPhones and iPads were draining faster as a result, but Google issued a statement toLifehacker on Thursday denying any problems with its new app.
Reports that Google Now drains battery life are incorrect. We understand people’s concern about seeing the Location Services icon stay on when they use Google Now. Many apps that keep the icon on actually do drain the phone’s battery because they require very accurate location. (For example a navigation app has to run your GPS all the time to keep you from missing your turn.) Google Now is built very differently: it uses cell towers and wifi hot spots for much lower battery impact.
We extensively tested Google Now on iOS for months and didn’t see reports of significant battery impact — we would encourage you to try it in the Google Search app for a few days and we don’t expect you to see significant impact on your battery. If you are seeing a problem, please do tell us (just tap feedback in the app settings). We take user feedback very seriously.
